Plein Air Sunrise to Sunset

taught by Joanne Radmilovich Kollman

Skill level: All levels

Media: Demonstrations in oil painting and marker sketches. Oil, Gouache & Drawing. Other media by instructor approval

Come and spend an early summer weekend with Joanne Kollman. She will help you overcome fears and have fun while you are learning to see as a painter while mastering various levels of color mixing, value and temperature relationships, and expressive mark-making. Menucha's grounds will provide much to observe and paint. You'll be well-fed and comfortable in our accommodations.

Students will learn techniques to capture the fleeting light, composition & design studies and beginners will learn the basics of Plein Air painting.

The workshop will begin on Friday June 21 in the afternoon, and will conclude on Sunday at 11:00am. Students will have the opportunity to watch instructor demo and or paint along Friday late morning and Sunday afternoon.

Workshop Description:

Day 1 Composition in the Landscape from sketch to color study.

Day 2 Sunrise to Sunset Color notes and the big sky

Day 3 Optional sunrise painting, Breakfast, critique and check out.

Optional painting on Menucha grounds or surrounding area, Portland Womens Forum.

Students will work from life on location or in or near the studio. Quick thumbnail design sketches will translate directly from life observation to painting.

Interpret what you see, understand your big idea, compose and paint!

Painting is about relationship. Learn to think in terms of pieces of paint, brushstrokes, & mark-making in paint application to express an idea.

Daily demo, instruction, individual help and critique.

Recommended materials: Gouache, Casein or Oil paint. Contact the instructor if you want to use watercolor or acrylic.

Presentation will cover the big idea, how that translates into a design, and then into a painting

About the Artist

Joanne Radmilovich Kollman is a long time Oregonian. Her abstract representational painting of the figure, landscape and still life portray a lyrical and energetic style. Brushwork and use of broken color elicit movement and spontaneity in her paintings. Joanne paints or draws from the model, still life, or landscape with a belief that working from life is the best way to learn, to understand color and to interpret emotion into a painting.
Joanne is a signature member of the American Impressionist Society. Her work is distributed nationally to galleries, and she exhibits locally at Oregon Society of Artists, the Robin Becic Gallery and other venues and competitions where she has won numerous awards. She facilitates life drawing and the single pose figure sessions at Oregon Society of Artists as well as instructed classes: Expressive Painting, Portrait and Figure Painting, Life Drawing & Plein Air.
“My surroundings motivate and interest me to use any subject to explore the expressive quality of the oil paint. I strive to capture the spirit of what I see and experience through color, brushwork and observation of changing light.
